Ozogoche, Joe Houlberg Silva (Ecuador, 2024)
Every year, Don Feliciano collects cuvivíes, migratory birds that inexplicably commit suicide at the Ozogoche Lakes in the Ecuadorian Andes Mountains. The event is a time of celebration and festivity for the surrounding communities. Don Feliciano, as one of the elders, passes on the traditions and history of the Ozogoche’s relationship with the cuvivíes to his granddaughter, Sisa, and the other children in the villages. However, with the harvest of these birds declining, members of the family have migrated to the United States; their news comes only through phone calls and TikTok reels. Because nature can no longer provide as much as it once did, the community now struggles with the decision to leave.
“Ozogoche manages to trap us with the same spell with which the mountains and lagoons seduce the cuvivíes. (…) A work of love greater and more valuable than any divine prodigy.” —René Sánchez, Cinema Without Borders.
“The film captures in a sublime way all the strength, majesty and temperament of the landscapes, the mountains and the lagoon. It also turns the theme of migration into a leitmotif that is expressed through image and sound with a plastic-visual richness and variety of resources.” —Alejandra Carvajal, The Other Cinema.
