In the eyes of many, jazz is that music located on top of a pedestal. Far away, inviolable. But not in full view of Oscar Jerome, who is so fond of the genre that he can't stand it staying up there without coming into contact with the rest of the world. The Brit definitely has another idea of what jazz should be in 2023: music in contact with other music, a sound that can and should touch other sounds. As Jerome sees it, jazz has to update its legacy at ground level, in the streets, in the city. And luckily for him, he's not alone: he's part of a whole generation of like-minded London-based musicians.
On his own or in the company of colleagues, Jerome has been adding spoonfuls of groove to jazz since 2016 because funk, Afrobeat, soul and tropicalia fit together his pedestal. And from there comes his second album The Spoon, the most recent of his career to date.
