Nativity Scene in Barcelona Cathedral
to
Barcelona Cathedral Pla de la Seu, 08002 Barcelona
The traditional Nativity scene returns to the cloister of Barcelona Cathedral inviting visitors to reflect on the mystery of Christmas. Inspired by the Latin expression suaviter in modo, fortiter in re (gentle in manner, firm in purpose) the Nativity scene highlights how the birth of Jesus embodies the tenderness of a child born in humility and the power of God made present in the world. The Cathedral emphasizes how “the delicacy of Christ’s birth contrasts with the profound message of Christmas, which brings a promise of peace, justice and hope for all humanity.” At the same time, it sends a message of fraternity, inviting everyone to “welcome with tenderness those who are different, from a firm identity marked by this message of love.”
The message becomes tangible through nature, which recreates the journey with a path of tall grasses. Their presence forms a soft mass of vegetation that guides the visitor’s gaze and steps, subtly yet clearly defining the path to the spring. The composition of the vegetation combines fragility and strength, inviting one to discover how simplicity can hold the greatest light.
The lighting is discreet and arranged in the form of very dim light networks at the base of the plants, creating an effect of lightness that reinforces the idea of softness that inspires the whole ensemble.
