Although Ravel's La valse was initially conceived as a symphonic poem paying tribute to Johann Strauss, it evolved into a stage piece, where masses of sound interact with a delightful cadence. The final version, completed in 1920, was rejected by Diaghilev, who did not consider it a ballet.
A new work by Swedish composer Lisa Streich has its world premiere at L’Auditori: Elle est belle et elle rit, a piece that takes a bright, positive approach to the theme.
The concert concludes with a piece that evokes the vastness of Nordic nature. Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony, one of his most emotive and spectacular works, inspires admiration for the sublime harmony of its parts, coming together as a benevolent force yet culminating in a dramatic finale.
