Invited by writer and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga, South African director Milisuthando Bongela—one of the most original voices in contemporary African cinema—presents her debut film, Milisuthando, a documentary essay about growing up under the apartheid regime.
South Africa was ruled by apartheid from 1948 until 1994. Almost two decades earlier, in 1976, the state of Transkei was created as part of a political experiment promoted by the government, marketed as a promise of independence for the Black population. In reality, it was nothing more than the materialization of the dream of segregation. Milisuthando Bongela grew up within the borders of this illusory liberation and did not realize she was living under apartheid until the regime ended. Her film Milisuthando revisits the history of Transkei through personal archives and raises uncomfortable questions about this troubling, often overlooked experience of apartheid.
Film will be screened in English with subtitles in Catalan.
