The Rite of Spring overturned clichés and refuted the romantic concept of what is "beautiful" and emotional in classical music. Written for the Ballets Russes, its premiere in 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris provoked one of the most notorious scandals in the history of music — and the performance didn’t even finish.
The Orquestra de la Suisse Romande is responsible for bringing this work, marked by its striking timbral and rhythmic contrasts, to the stage under the baton of Jonathan Nott, who has been its conductor since 2017. In the first part of the concert, the violinist Midori will also perform the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius.
