British musician Matt Maltese presents his new album Hers, released in May and the sixth of his career. Entirely self-produced, it stands as his most insular and intimate recording to date, unfolding within a twilight world. The result is a captivating blend of sincerity, biting irony and subtle emotional tremors, placing him somewhere between Randy Newman and Father John Misty. It is another demonstration of the talent behind global hits such as “As the World Caves In,” with more than 503 million streams on Spotify, “Intolewd” and “Everyone Adores You (At Least I Do).”
“These songs are powerful because of their honesty and emotional weight, but they also have a touch of lightness, which is an important counterpoint for me. You can have the crying, but then there’s the twist and the smile,” Maltese said of his latest album. Self-criticism and vulnerability play a central role in Hers. “I’ve said it before, but I think the best work is the kind where you allow yourself to look pathetic. It’s not about being cooler, but about being vulnerable. In Hers I’ve managed to make that more present.”
