María Pagés powerfully and sensitively reclaims the voice and wisdom of women through flamenco.
De Scheherezade picks up the story where One Thousand and One Nights ends and presents a woman who, through the word, transforms her destiny and chooses life over death. Using a language rooted in flamenco, the piece asserts feminine power and the word as a force capable of changing the world and freeing humanity from fear and submission.
María Pagés was awarded the National Dance Prize in 2002 and the ADE Choreography Prize in 1996. She has also received the Léonide Massine Award for Art della Danza – Al Valore in 2004 and the Culture Prize of the Community of Madrid in 2007. In 2014, she was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts. One year later, Santiago de Chile recognized one of her productions as the best International Dance performance, and in 2016 she received the 4th Culture Prize of the University of Seville. In 2017, she was awarded the “El Público” Lifetime Achievement Prize by Canal Sur TV and the Best Voices Award at the Jerez Festival for the work Óyeme con los ojos.
The 10 giraldillos of the Seville Flamenco Art Biennial confirm her as one of the most essential flamenco dancers and choreographers.
