Portraying emotional suffering through music is a compositional device that dates back to the very origins of the art of sound. Catalan soprano María Hinojosa and the Barcelona-based ensemble The Ministers of Pastime, led by Italian harpsichordist Francesco Corti, invite us on a journey through seventeenth- and eighteenth-century spiritual and religious music, rooted in the poetics of pain.
The program includes excerpts from various settings of the Stabat Mater — one of the most enduring musical genres — whose medieval text depicts the Virgin Mary's suffering at the crucifixion of her son. Under the title Dolentes, works by Barbara Strozzi, Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bach, Terradellas, and Francesca Caccini are performed, alongside the world premiere of a specially commissioned piece by one of Spain’s most renowned and charismatic composers, José María Sánchez-Verdú.
