In Maoist China in the 1970s, the destiny of a boy as young as eleven is to work in the fields of his rural community. But the searches for young talent by government officials find him, with the help of his teacher. Admitted to Madame Mao's dance academy in Beijing, he will spend years training day and night. However, an American professor impressed by his talent suggests that he continue his training as an exchange student in the U.S. 

The film received the Audience Award and Best Soundtrack Award from the Australian Film Institute. 

Mao's Last Dancer will be screened in English and Mandarin.
