Love Is Strange, Ira Sachs (USA, 2014)
After nearly 40 years together, Ben and George finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan when same-sex marriage is legalized in New York. However, soon after, George loses his job as a music teacher at a Catholic school, and the couple is forced to sell their apartment. Victims of the relentless New York City real estate market, they temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. Staying with friends, their relationship is tested by the challenges of aging, love and life’s uncertainties. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by inter-generational tensions and the capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements. Love is Strange reflects on the fragility of life and the impact of external hardships on personal bonds, delving into the emotional consequences of these struggles.
