Formed in 1979 on the Isle of Wight, the British jazz-funk and pop-rock band Level 42 is recognized for its fusion of jazz, funk and pop, as well as for the bass prowess of its leader and vocalist, Mark King. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the band achieved international fame.
The band, initially formed by Mark King (bass and vocals), brothers Phil Gould (drums) and Boon Gould (guitar), and Mike Lindup (keyboards and vocals), debuted with the album Level 42 (1981), showcasing their instrumental virtuosity with songs like "Love Games" and "Something About You," their biggest international hit. In 1987, they released Running in the Family, their most commercially successful album, featuring hits like "Lessons in Love" and "Children Say."
