Le déjeuner sur l'herbe, Jean Renoir (France,1959)
Le déjeuner sur l'herbe is a romantic comedy about a biology professor who has invented a method of artificial insemination and is running for the post of President of Europe. To celebrate his recent engagement, he invites his friends and colleagues to a picnic but is subjected to pranks by nature.
Le déjeuner sur l'herbe features in José Luis Guerin´s film series, The Film Landscape. Linking nature with impressionist painting, it mocks an artificial idea of science with humor. Jean Renoir filmed almost the entire movie in the family home where he spent his youth—the house-studio of painter Auguste Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Each tree was previously observed and painted by his father in that very same garden.
This screening will be accompanied by an introductory video by the film director and screenwriter José Luis Guerin, where he will discuss the reason for his selection and the relationship established between cinema and landscape in the film.
The film will be screened in original version with subtitles in Spanish.
