In keeping with the strong commitment to contribute to the Spanish opera scene, the Castell de Peralada Festival presents a new in-house production, once again with Paco Azorín as director and stage manager after the success achieved in 2015 with Otello by Verdi, awarded best production of the year at the Campoamor Lyric Awards.
La Traviata (sempre libera) by Azorín seeks to move away from stereotypes and take a 180-degree turn to see and enjoy this love story from a new perspective: that of a liberated woman. As the director himself explains “the empowerment of women in the early twenty-first century has enabled us to see the world through different eyes, with a much more open, global and integrationist vision.”
Once again, the festival has brought together a top-flight line-up for the occasion, led by Russian soprano Ekaterina Bakanova, one of the stars of today since she made her debut in 2015 at Covent Garden in this role, substituting Sonia Yoncheva five hours before the start of the performance, achieving a resounding success thanks to her dazzling vocal power; the brilliant winner of the Operalia 2011 competition, tenor René Barbera–first prize by the jury and also the audience prize–will play Alfredo in Peralada; and American baritone Quinn Kelsey will play Giorgio Germont, the role in which he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in 2016. The Cor Intermezzo returns to the festival alongside the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu led by conductor Ricardo Frizza. A production, where nothing will be what it seems, although the characters will be completely free.
