La forza del destino is an opera of Verdi's highest class. Released four years after Un ballo in maschera, a very special production of it's time, it coincides with the taste of the time for a look at the exoticism of the new world. Focused on this fascination with Spanish culture, Verdi wrote Ernani (1844), Il trovatore (1853), Don Carlo (1867) and La forza del destino (1862).
The opera opens with the dream of two lovers, Don Alvaro and Leonora, preparing to wed, but the two lovers are surprised by the young woman's father. Bad luck will follow them when Don Alvaro, whilst lowering his pistols to the ground, one accidentally goes off and kills the father. Fortune is vacillating and laughs at the fate of men.
Only Verdi's talent could transform a interwoven plot, filled with clichés of the Spanish romantic school of thought, into an opera that is the quintessence of the Italian repertoire of the 19th century and a true musical miracle.
