La Bohème
La Boheme is the great romantic tragedy of Puccini set in Paris Bohemi. This impressive production of Richard Jones starring Sonya Yoncheva and Charles Castronovo is being screened in Barcelona cinemas from the Royal Opera House in London.
Richard Jones captures the symbiosis between tragedy and comedy in La Bohème perfectly, with an exhaustive analysis of the work of Puccini, of his characters, especially that of the moving Mimi and the charming Musetta clear in his production. The designs of Stewart Laink mark the contrast between the poverty of the bohemian penthouses and the splendor of the shops of the Paris bourgeoisie on Christmas day.
La Bohème was premiered at the Teatre Regio in Turin on February 1, 1896. A year later it was performed at Covent Garden and returns there now to the Royal Opera House.
