The Korean Film Festival Barcelona returns to bring Korean culture and cuisine closer to the city through films ranging from independent auteur cinema to blockbuster hits.
The festival opens with Ryu Yeon-su's debut film Boy in the Pool, a moving film about a boy and a girl who meet on Jeonju Island and become friends by swimming together.
Five examples of the best Korean arthouse cinema make up the "Seoul Indies Section." Director Yoon Eunkyoung demonstrates in The Tenants that she's seen a lot of David Lynch, making it one of the section's favorites. Equally notable are the otaku-inspired LGBTI romantic drama 404 Still Remain directed by Uhm Ha-neul, and the story of a middle-aged woman's plight and relationship with her mother in Red Nails directed by Hwang Seulgi. Rounding out the selection are Choi Jong-yong's Waterdrop, a reflection on what constitutes a happy family, and Lee Jeahan's The Face of Hwanhee, an independent collection of short stories that are a fusion of the styles of directors Hong Sang Soo and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
The "Premieres Section," covers a variety of genres featuring major titles that have not yet been released in theaters in Spain. From one of the most anticipated releases based on a hit K-drama, Love in the Big City, to the family comedy filled with plot twists About Family to the powerful thriller Nocturnal, starring Ha Jung-woo, and the horror flick The Ghost Game.
Seven action films make up the "Panorama" section and the "Special Sessions" section features a session of short films made by Korean students, an animated film for children and parents and interactive talks for both the film enthusiast and industry professionals.
Alongside stellar films, you can enjoy parallel activities like hangul writing, Korean gastronomy, workshops, exhibitions and Korean games that bring you even closer to Korean culture. All films are screened in original version and subtitled in Catalan or Spanish. General admission for films is €8.00, and tickets can be purchased on the Cinemes Girona official website.
