Juan de Marcos González is the man who, in 1996, instigated by Nick Gold and Ry Cooder, managed to reunite Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, and Pío Leiva, among other forgotten stars of the golden age of Cuban music, for the exciting Buena Vista Social Club.
Recognized forever as the architect of that unrepeatable project, the old leader of Sierra Maestra (a traditional septet that, since 1976 and over 14 albums, devoted himself body and soul to divulge the Cuban son) returns to the Voll Damm Jazz Fetival as master of ceremonies of Afro-Cuban Allstars, an orchestra of 14 musicians capable of teaching authentic lessons of Cuban music.
Acclaimed by Downbeat magazine for its continuous years of excellence, the band reveres old figures such as Rubén González and Arsenio Rodríguez (a musician with whom Juan de Marcos's father played for many years), combining classic Cuban styles such as son and danzón with contemporary rhythms such as timba, and reminds us, above all, that Cuba continues to be an inexhaustible source of talent and music lover's pleasure.
