In this concert the members of the Jove Capella choir perform one of the finest choral masterpieces in Hispanic music: the Misa pro Defunctis (Mass for the Dead), or requiem, by Cristóbal de Morales. Alongside works by Francisco Guerrero and Tomás Luis de Victoria, the Mass for the Dead, penned for five voices by the Andalusian composer Morales, is one of the most distinctive examples of Castilian polyphony from the second half of the 16th century. It is a piece that goes beyond individual beliefs, opening the door to a serene meditation akin to the mystical experiences of his contemporaries Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross.
