The Jove Capella Reial de Catalunya is an initiative of Jordi Savall and Lluís Vilamajó, created with the aim of promoting a new professional vocal ensemble to offer a musical repertoire with the voices of young singers.
The Jove Capella Reial de Catalunya returns to L’Auditori to perform works related to the Virgin Mary by two of the greatest composers of the 16th century: Tomás Luis de Victoria from Ávila and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina from Rome. Although the two composers coincided in time and place, their works, although similar in style, are very different in terms of aesthetics and expressive resources, almost opposed even. Under the title of Stabat Mater, the various pieces from the repertoire include songs of praise to the Virgin Mary (Victoria, Quam pulchri sunt) and Jesus (Victoria, Pange lingua) and motets that run through the significant moments in Mary’s life: from the time she hears that she is to be the mother of the Messiah (Victoria, Ne timeas, Maria) to the crucifixion and the burial of her son (Victoria, Sepulto Domino), and the painful mourning of a mother, which gives the concert its name (Palestrina, Stabat Mater).
