Joseph Calleja was just 13 years old when he decided that he wanted to be a singer after seeing the film The Great Caruso, performed by tenor Mario Lanza. Since then, the Malta-born tenor has steadily established his rising career, built step by step.
Today, Calleja regularly performs at such opera houses as the Metropolitan in New York, London’s Covent Garden and the Staatsoper in Munich. The exclusive artist with the prestigious Decca label, he has a lengthy discography, and in 2011 his DVD of La Traviata at the Royal Opera House alongside Renée Fleming was nominated for a Grammy. He will be making his festival debut this summer with a recital of opera arias and song in the setting of the Carme Church; the ideal format to be able to savor his pure and luminous voice. A voice that perfectly combines the smoothest and sweetest lyricism, of heart-rending suffering, with the depth and dimension needed for the great arias of Verdi, Puccini, and Donizetti. He himself attributes his success to technique and discipline, but also to constant training. Over time, his voice has gained in body and strength and his style continues to be unmistakable.
