With Joaquim Gomis: Transatlantic, the foyer revisits a key figure in the history of the Fundació Joan Miró. Before becoming its first president and a tireless advocate of modern culture, Gomis travelled repeatedly to the United States during the 1920s, a period of rapid and profound transformation in the country.
Equipped with little more than a camera and an extraordinary visual intuition, he captured oil fields, the cotton industry, emerging skyscrapers and even details from the ocean liner deck that carried him across the Atlantic. These now iconic images anticipate the principles of the New Vision and reveal a young, self-taught photographer whose work was already radically modern.
