When Tweedy published a book called How to Write a Song in 2020, no one was surprised. If anyone has the authority to explain how a song is made, it's him. He has written so many throughout his life that at some point he began releasing solo albums because Wilco, the band he has led for three decades, could not absorb them all.
About to turn 60, Tweedy presents an album that explores American roots rock from three angles: his first band, Uncle Tupelo, a pioneer of alt-country; his most popular project, Wilco; and his solo career. Throughout his career, he has always appeared as the same normal guy: a rock star in the body of the neighbor you bump into in the hall. This genuineness contrasts with his extraordinary ability to generate vivid images through his music, at times cruelly real and at others magically abstract.
