Born and raised in East Atlanta, American rapper JID and three-time Grammy nominee JID grew up with his parents’ collection of classic funk and soul LPs before breaking into the hip-hop scene with his 2015 EP DiCaprio. On this EP, he collaborated with the duo EarthGang, with whom he had already toured in 2014. It was there that he was discovered by J. Cole, who quickly signed him to his label, Dreamville/Interscope Records. Soon after, JID debuted with that major label with the acclaimed album The Never Story (2017), which was quickly followed by DiCaprio 2 (2018). This latter project garnered significant press attention, earning him a spot on that year’s XXL Freshman Class list of emerging talent.
JID further cemented his status as a captivating rap talent with standout performances on Dreamville’s platinum-certified compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019), which reached #1 on the Billboard charts and earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance. His rising popularity led to a collaboration with Imagine Dragons on the song “Enemy” for the soundtrack of the Netflix series Arcane, which has amassed nearly two billion streams to date, earned four RIAA platinum certifications, and received nominations for MTV Music Awards, AMAs and iHeart Awards.
In 2022, JID released The Forever Story, an album so critically acclaimed it was hailed as a classic by Clash magazine and appeared on numerous year-end lists. The album peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA. Furthermore, his single “Surround Sound,” featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate, became a viral sensation with its “Ceiling” TikTok challenge, entering the Billboard Hot 100, topping the Billboard Viral 50 and TikTok charts, and achieving triple platinum certification from the RIAA.
After the accumulated success of all the aforementioned projects, JID announced the launch of his fourth studio album, God Does Like Ugly featuring collaborations with such notable artists as Clipse, Ciara, Ty Dolla $ign, Vince Staples, Jessie Reyez and Westside Gunna, helping JID create a rich and diverse soundscape.
