Solitude, expressed through the Chinese pole, a circus apparatus that this artist takes beyond conventional technique.

Experimentation and the creation of a personal and distinctive language with the Chinese pole are the ultimate aims of Alexandre Duran, an artist trained in dance and theater who later devoted himself to circus arts and is now presenting his first show as both creator and performer. He uses a physical language based on twisted shapes, improbable movements, unusual angles and feats of strength. All this unfolds in a square space with a central pole that shows the performer alone on stage, like someone shipwrecked on an island, the Insula evoked by the title. Solitude, and also emptiness, are the themes of a performance that questions the Greek concept of “pathei mathos,” that is, learning through suffering. The same strip of tape that confines the protagonist of the performance within his own island also allows him to create a new identity, under which he will break limits, subvert the rules of space and transform himself physically and existentially.

The creator of the piece, Alexandre Duran Davins, trained in martial arts, Tanztheater dance and theater following the Stanislavski method. He specialized in the Chinese pole at the Rogelio Rivel Circus School and the École de Cirque de Lyon. He graduated from the École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque (ESAC) in Brussels in 2023. He has worked on productions such as The Chosen Haram, by Sadiq Ali, seen at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, has collaborated with artists such as choreographer Alexander Vantournhout and is part of the A l'encontre project.
