How to Design a Revolution: The Chilean Road to Design is a comprehensive exhibition on graphic and industrial design during Salvador Allende’s government in Chile (1970–1973). It represents an exceptional case in design history, where the unprecedented act of choosing revolution through the ballot box led to the first instance of a nation collectively designing its future through socialism and democracy.
The exhibition, originally displayed in Santiago de Chile as part of the program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the civilian-military coup, features original pieces and design reproductions aimed at democratizing access to reading and music, reducing technological dependence, and addressing child malnutrition, among other goals. One of the exhibition’s most notable highlights is the first fully reconstructed and functional Cybersyn operations room—an ambitious project for networked communication among the country’s industries, designed to enable participatory management of production.
