Herman Dune explains that his latest album, Odysseus, was born while he was stuck in Montreal during the pandemic. At the time, he was the only guest in a hotel in the Jewish-Italian neighbourhood of Mile End, praying to return home to Los Angeles with his wife and three cats. “I found myself caught between two worlds,” he explains. It is a beautiful paradox: the author of such warm and welcoming albums as Not on Top or Giant—released when Herman Dune was still a duo rather than the solo project of David-Ivar Herman Düne—encountered Odysseus while forcibly removed from his home.
Perhaps Herman Dune recalls those days with the epic tone of a Greek feat, but the truth is that Odysseus is a charming and light folk-pop album that seems designed to put everyday life into perspective. Pressing play feels like arriving home.
