During the last thirty years, Clemente Bernad (Pamplona / Iruñea, 1963) has devoted himself to photographing the major social and political crises in southern Europe, conflicts that need to be followed over the long term. His work circulates in self-financed publications and in exhibitions in which the documentary record falls within the practices of contemporary art.
Hemendik Hurbil / Cerca de aquí is Bernad’s latest book project. In it, he has gathered together one of the most exhaustive portrayals of the Basque conflict, with 470 photographs taken between 1987 and 2018. The exhibition deriving from this project highlights the empirical nature of this kind of photography that requires the photographer to be in the place where the events are taking place, at those moments when the violence suffers—as Bernad puts it—from a perverse viscosity.
