Guillén: The Magic of Set Design
to
Museu d'Història de Catalunya Plaça de Pau Vila 3, 08003 Barcelona
Guillén, a satirical cartoonist, painter and stage designer with a long and prolific career, is a visual creator at the service of the performing arts and social and political criticism. His drawings published in the press are a graphic chronicle of what has happened in Spain, Catalonia and the city of Barcelona from the Democratic Transition through today.
He is known for reinventing stage language and its components: objects, artifacts, figurines, characterization, masks, stage space. Contrary to the scenographer's idea as a decorator, Guillén seeks the concept of a total work of art, in which form, color, objects, furniture and costumes are transformed by virtue of what drama requires in every moment. He adds tricks, mechanical or virtual effects that alter the scene, impacting the viewer and creating a magical effect.
Since 1992, Guillén’s art has been associated with various plays and operas by comedians that have circulated around the world. In recent years he has developed a pictorial work, a reflection of the questions posed by the history of art of all time, which is now on display at the Museum d’Història de Catalunya.
