This seminar, co-organized with the Institute of Culture at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, addresses the fruitful exchange between two key figures in contemporary image theory: Aby Warburg (1866-1929) and Georges Didi-Huberman (1953).
Reading and studying the work of art historian Aby Warburg had a profound impact on Georges Didi-Huberman’s thinking. In turn, the French philosopher has provided us with the most complete and in-depth interpretation of Warburg’s personality and work, reconsidering his role and developing his intellectual project to bring us new keys for understanding the image.
This seminar looks at Didi-Huberman’s method of thinking, based on dialogue, not only his own with other fundamental voices in contemporary culture (Friedrich Nietzsche, Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud, Warburg), but also the dialogues between those thinkers themselves, through a combinatorial system aimed at arriving at an understanding of their ideas. Drawing on concrete examples from the encounter between Didi-Huberman and Warburg, the speakers will attempt to outline the French philosopher’s system of study and thought.
This event will take place in Spanish, English, and Catalan.
