"Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti," directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters (Nigeria, 2024).
Funmilayo was the first girl to attend Abeokuta Grammar School. It was the early 20th century in colonial Nigeria, and Funmilayo rebelled against everything she considered unacceptable. She stood up for education and women's rights, against colonial oppression and that of traditional authorities. A teacher by profession, she became the most respected social leader in the area. Her women's union eventually gathered over 20,000 members, uniting the most elite bourgeoisie with market vendors. An activist, revolutionary, and proud of her roots, Funmilayo, the first woman to lead a business in Nigeria, gave birth to and raised a son named Fela Kuti, who would, in turn, revolutionize the world of music with Afrobeat.
Film will be screened in original version (Yoruba, Egba, English) with subtitles in Catalan.
A film in the 2025 edition of Wallay! African Film Festival.
