From Gaza to Hormuz: The Middle East as the Testing Ground of a New Global Order

As part of the opening event of the Barcelona Summer School of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Yezid Sayigh, Natalia Sancha and Tinhinan El Kadi, moderated by Eduard Soler, will discuss why the Middle East has become the testing ground where a new global order is being forged.

Since October 2023, the Middle East has entered a new phase of overlapping crises that are redrawing the region's political map and exposing the fragility of the international order. The war in Gaza has laid bare the limits of international humanitarian law and the paralysis of the United Nations, while the confrontation around the Strait of Hormuz has turned freedom of navigation into a contested principle rather than an assumed one. All of this has turned the Middle East the testing ground where a new global order is being forged.

In this round-table, moderated by Eduard Soler i Lecha, three experts will examine these transformations from complementary angles: Yezid Sayigh, senior fellow at the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, Natalia Sancha, journalist and former political adviser to the EU Special Envoy for the Middle East Peace Process, and Tinhinan El Kadi, postdoctoral researcher at Oxford's Department of International Development.

This event opens the fifth edition of the Barcelona Summer School of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, a joint initiative of IBEI, IEMed and Catalonia Internacional with the support, among others, of CCCB.
