This concert by the Barcelona Symphonic Band is entirely dedicated to flamenco culture, featuring the exceptional talent of flamenco singer Rafael de Utrera. The performance begins with the Sinfonietta Flamenca (Flamenco Symphony), a suite for band in three movements that combines elements of classical music with an unmistakable flamenco language, composed by Carles Suriñach in 1971. A similar essence will be evoked from a more contemporary perspective in the concerto for two alto saxophones that Ernesto Aurignac named FlamenK in 2024.
Going back to the roots of the genre—or at least to one of its most internationally recognized names—the audience will hear versions of "Canción de amor" and "Zyryab," written by the great Paco de Lucía, as well as "La primavera" by Camarón de la Isla, with whom the guitarist often tried to collaborate due to the inexplicably intense magic of his singing. This tribute to the genre will conclude with “Coplas de la amistad” from the Requiem to Enrique Morente, written in memoriam by Joan Díaz in 2017, seven years after his death.
