Les Fires de Sant Narcís are the main festivities of the city of Girona, taking their name from their patron saint, Saint Narcissus of Girona. His feast day is celebrated on the days leading up to October 29th, as a way of paying homage to the saint having protected the city from plague and other disasters. Today, the saint is still held responsible for “the cold snap of Saint Narcis,” a sudden drop in temperature that kills off the entire population of flies in the city every year.
Music is a backbone of the festivities, with Paseo de La Copa being filled with stalls and free concerts with music of all kinds (including a competition for emerging bands), the perfect complement to the envelat, a space in which live bands invite the people of Girona to take part in traditional dances. Cultural spectacles, such as theater, castellers and fireworks also add to the grandeur of this event and provide entertainment for both adults and children alike.
