Fina Miralles
Fina Miralles (Sabadell, 1950) is one of the most significant Spanish artists active from the seventies to the present day. Her work arose in the context of the Franco dictatorship, a hostile, limiting and creatively castrating environment in which censorship controlled all forms of expression for “moral" reasons determined by the Catholic Church and sponsored by the regime. Miralles broke with the academicism taught in art schools at that time and with established behavioral norms for women.
Her practice reconfigures the concept of the artistic, within a multiplicity of attitudes that challenges historical definitions of conceptual art. The breadth and complexity of her ideas push the limits of any and all labels. It is perhaps because of this refusal to be put in a metaphorical box that her work is so little known internationally, which is something this exhibition aims to help correct by displaying her body of work.
