Ringu film screening and panel discussion

Filmoteca de Catalunya Plaça Salvador Seguí 1-9, 08001 Barcelona

In 1998 a ghostly girl with a muddy white dress and jet black hair first climbed out of a television set, terrorizing audiences. Twenty years later and the legacy of Japanese film Ringu (1998) is still going strong, the original film having spawned a host of sequels, prequels and remakes, including the well-regarded The Ring (2002), starring Naomi Watts. The franchise has captured the popular imagination like few other horror films: the idea of the videotape that kills you when you watch it, the sinister voice that calls to say you will die in seven days, and the seemingly innocent but deadly ghost girl Sadako have all entered global pop culture.
Now, Filmoteca de Catalunya are hosting a screening of the original film on the big screen, followed by a discussion panel about why certain horror films make such a cultural impact. The panel gathers horror experts including director Víctor García, whose credits include Hellraiser: Revelations (2011) and Gallows Hill (2013), and horror distributor Ferran Herranz, responsible for releasing Personal Shopper (2016), to discuss the film and the cult following.
