On October 31st, while much of the world celebrates Halloween, people in Mexico usually prepare for a celebration that is just as colourful and yet more sombre. Traditionally, El Día de Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd, and one of its most intriguing practices, the building of altars to commemorate the deceased, has made its way to Barcelona. For the past few years, over 20 local businesses have banded together to create the 'Ruta de Altares', displaying a colourful altar with a specific theme and dedication in each locale, and inviting the public to visit. The biggest concentration of altars this year is in the Gràcia neighbourhood, and you can visit traditional designs as well as spaces dedicated to celebrities such as Roald Dahl, David Bowie and Prince.
