Essayist Éric Marty and philosophers Marta Segarra and Clara Serra talk about politics and desire in Sade's work in two conversations moderated by writer Albert Mestres and philosopher Begonya Saez Tajafuerce.

This second session of the series Reading Sade Today explores the French writer's legacy in contemporary thought from the standpoint of two key concepts that run through his work.

The political dimension of Sade’s texts is, perhaps, the one that is the least known to the general public. When he intercalated a manifesto titled Frenchmen, a further effort if you wish to be Republicans! into his Philosophy in the Boudoir, he did so because he was thinking precisely of the need for radical change in the French body politic. Pasolini shifted this political criticism to an association of fascism with the consumer society in his Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom. In this conversation, essayist Éric Marty speaks with writer and translator Albert Mestres about the political reading of Sade’s work and its relationship with the present.

In recent years, desire has taken center stage in discussions within the feminist movement, especially with regard to such crucial issues as consent, sexual freedom and legal efforts to end gender-based violence. In the work of the Marquis de Sade, fulfillment of boundless desire can lead to freedom but also to evil. In this conversation, the philosophers Clara Serra and Marta Segarra speak about the relationship between desire and free will in a conversation moderated by philosopher Begonya Saez Tajafuerce.

The discussion will be held in Spanish, Catalan and French with simultaneous translation from French to Catalan.
