The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 has put us in a critical (but not new) situation. How has society dealt with pandemics in the past?
This feeling of total uncertainty and bewilderment must be the same as that of many of the societies that preceded us, which had to adjust its coexistence with the diseases that affected them. The presence of a long-lasting infectious disease, a wide geographical spread and a high mortality rate could have been one of the causes of the collapse and decline of some of the most prosperous societies in our past.
