Since the Industrial Revolution, the massive use of fossil fuels has released millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, triggering climate disruption across the globe with devastating consequences. Although clean and renewable energy sources are available, our global economy remains heavily dependent on oil and its derivatives—in fact, their use continues to rise.
Today, the greatest challenge facing humanity is the transition to a sustainable energy system. Can this shift be achieved with existing technologies, or are new innovations required? What resources must be invested to fully decarbonize the economy—and how much time do we have? What impact would this transition have on our societies? Do we need to lower our standards of living? Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba and internationally recognized expert on energy transitions, Vaclav Smil offers a clear-eyed analysis of our current energy system and provides essential insights into how it might evolve in the near future.
Event will be held in Catalan and English with simultaneous translation from English to Catalan.
