Behind the name Early James is Frederick James Mullis Jr., one of the crown jewels discovered by Dan Auerbach, who releases his albums through Easy Eye Sound—the label run by The Black Keys’ frontman himself. Known for seeking out overlooked legends, particularly in the blues world, Auerbach was used to reviving the careers of artists who, for one reason or another, had never found mainstream success. But when he came across James through mutual friends, it was love at first listen. Auerbach heard in his music the perfect blend of Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt, of Hank Williams and Howlin’ Wolf.
