Since the discovery of the first exoplanet in 1995, more than 5,000 others have been found. Some are too cold, others too hot—but some have temperatures that allow for the presence of liquid water and could therefore meet the conditions necessary to support life. Thanks to new-generation telescopes, we can now explore the atmospheres of these planets and even detect potential signs of biological activity. Will we ever be able to answer the big question: are we alone? Does it make sense to search for life as we know it? And if life does exist beyond Earth, could it be so fundamentally different that we wouldn’t even recognize it? What, in fact, does it mean to be alive?
Didier Queloz, Nobel Prize-winner and Nathalie Cabrol, Director of the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe, reflect on the possibilities of discovering extraterrestrial life—and what such a discovery, intelligent or not, could mean for humanity.
Event will be held in English and Catalan with simultaneous translation from English to Catalan.
