Diana Damrau and Jonas Kaufmann, two of the most outstanding German singers of our time, reunite at the Palau de la Música Catalana for a Lied recital, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch.

The chosen composers, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, are not only considered to be masters of their genre today, but there were also leading figures during their lifetimes, during the late Romantic period. As contemporaries and friends, they held each other in high esteem, even though they didn’t always agree on everything. Mahler himself acknowledged their differences, referring to a metaphor by Schopenhauer:

"Schopenhauer somewhere uses the image of two miners digging a tunnel from opposite sides, only to meet underground. This seems to characterize my relationship with Strauss quite well."

The program features both lighthearted and profound pieces by Gustav Mahler, alongside love songs by Richard Strauss.
