Benji, a proud gay man, falls in love with a handsome stranger, Jake, at an airport. The two feel an immediate attraction and enjoy a vacation in Amsterdam. Upon returning to normal life, Benji and Jake embark on monthly incognito trips to Amsterdam. However, the need to keep their story a secret begins to take its toll on Benji, which strains their relationship. As time passes, the trips become increasingly toxic, until something changes everything… Thus we follow Benji as he navigates the complications of love life and the resulting low self-esteem. Beyond its seductive sex scenes and its brilliant visual style, Departures is written with care and complexity, removing layer by layer everything that builds bonds until they end up breaking. This Manchester-made film, inspired by a real-life heartbreak and self-funded by a collective of working-class LGBTQ+ filmmakers, is a compelling production that you can't miss.
