The lyrics of Dead Kennedys have generally been political in nature, satirizing figures from both the left and the right, as well as authority in general, popular culture and even the punk movement itself. This blend of sarcasm, satire and black humor set them apart from other punk bands with a leftist political ideology. They have consistently attracted considerable controversy due to their provocative lyrics and artwork; several stores refused to sell their music and the band has faced multiple lawsuits throughout their career, sparking debates about censorship in rock music.
During their original run, they recorded four studio albums and one EP, with Jello Biafra serving as lead vocalist until 1986. Their acclaimed debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, was released in 1980. After D.H. Peligro joined as drummer, the band released the EP In God We Trust, Inc. in 1981, followed by Plastic Surgery Disasters (1982), Frankenchrist (1985) and Bedtime for Democracy (1986).
Since 2000, Dead Kennedys have been touring extensively, playing a series of sold-out concerts around the world, especially in the USA and Europe. Their live performances are known for being electrifying and energetic, featuring fan favorites such as "Holiday in Cambodia," "California Über Alles," and "Too Drunk to F**k." Following the death of D.H. Peligro in 2022, the current lineup is led by founding members East Bay Ray (guitar) and Klaus Flouride (bass), with Ron "Skip" Greer on vocals.
