The David Oistrakh String Quartet will represent the Russian string quartet school during L’Auditori’s Chamber Music season. The ensemble is formed of four of the most outstanding Russian musicians of the moment, all of them soloists who have come together through their passion for the art of the quartet. The David Oistrakh String Quartet offers a Russian program with Quartet No. 1 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, his most brilliant composition in this genre, as melodic and emotional as his finest orchestral works, Quartet No. 8, composed by Dmitry Shostakovich in response to his visit to the devastated city of Dresden and in memory of the Holocaust victims, and Quartet No. 2 by Aleksandr Borodin, a work that evokes the moment in which he met his wife and the blossoming of his love. Finally, we are taken into the popular world of Béla Bartók with his six Romanian Folk Dances, compositions based on melodies he collected during his field work on Eastern European folk music.
