In this season marking the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death, his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Symphony No. 10 are joined by a performance of his Concerto for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings. The program also features Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, a lively homage to 18th-century ballet. It was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered in 1920 at the Paris Opera, with stage designs and costumes by Pablo Picasso.
Shostakovich was one of the most important composers of the 20th century. His life and music continue to be reexamined today. The Piano and Trumpet Concerto, which premiered in Leningrad in 1933, reflects the spirit of a young composer—full of energy, humor and bold ideas, yet still true to his personal, lyrical style. It’s a brilliant and playful work, written just before Shostakovich entered a more difficult phase of his life. The applause it received at the premiere would soon turn into political pressure and fear. His story is one of contrast: artistic freedom versus repression, genius clashing with censorship and creativity surviving under dictatorship. He has often been called the "Beethoven of the 20th century" for his emotional depth and resilience.
