Joseph Leutgeb (1732–1811) was a prominent Austrian horn player during the second half of the 18th century, renowned for his virtuosic performances across Europe. In 1763, he became principal horn of the Salzburg orchestra, where he developed a close friendship with the Mozart family. He even traveled with them to Italy and remained a lifelong friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart until the composer’s death.
Mozart held Leutgeb in high regard, both personally and musically. Their friendship inspired the composer to write four horn concertos and a horn quintet—works that remain cornerstones of the horn repertoire today.
This program features not only the final two horn concertos from Mozart’s catalog, but also the Concerto for Two Horns—a work once attributed to Haydn, but now widely believed to be by the Bohemian-born composer Antonio Rosetti, whose name was Italianized during his lifetime.
