Ngugi wa Thiong’o, one of the most renowned references of contemporary African literature and postcolonial thought, will speak with his publisher Laura Huerga for the launch of his most recent book, The Upright Revolution in Catalan (La revolució vertical, Raig Verd, 2019).
The CCCB once again welcomes Ngugi wa Thiong’o, an iconic figure of the anti-imperialist struggle in Kenya and staunch defender of minority languages. Originally written in Kikuyu, the mother tongue of Ngugi wa Thiong’o, this fable draws attention to people’s capacity to change the world when they work together, and highlights the power of human bonds. The work, translated into more than eighty languages, has been simultaneously published in Spain in Catalan, Spanish and Asturian (Raig Verd), Aranese (Pagès editors), Euskara (Txalaparta), and Gallego (Editorial Galaxia), with illustrations by Agustín Comotto.
La revolució vertical also aims to pay tribute to oral literature of which, Thiong’o says, all languages are heirs. During his conversation with Laura Huerga, he will read some fragments from his book. The event will conclude with a performance by The Beating Souls choir, which will offer a song composed by Clara Peya especially for this occasion.
Language: Catalan / English, with translation Catalan - English
