As part of this year's Catalan Book Week, writer Douglas Stuart, winner of the Booker Prize 2020, will talk to writer Bel Olid about the publication of Shuggie Bain, a powerful novel about working-class Glasgow in the 1980s that has stirred up the British literary scene.

Shuggie Bain (Grove Press 2020) burst onto the scene as one of the most acclaimed literary debuts in British literature in recent years, a story that takes us into a humble home in working-class 1980s Glasgow devastated by the industrial dismantling of the Thatcher era. Ten years in the making, this novel, with elements of autobiography and large doses of social criticism, is unsettling, but it also raises questions about poverty, social marginality, and about the suffering that comes with the loss of the people for whom we feel boundless love. In this conversation, Douglas Stuart and Bel Olid will talk about a literary debut that took 10 years to construct and which won multiple awards, about literature as a tool for social criticism, and about the complexity of telling stories that move us and get under our skin.

This conversation is part of the programming for the 39th edition of the Catalan Book Week which will take place September 10-19 at the Moll de la Fusta in Barcelona.

This talk will be held in English with a simultaneous translation into Catalan.
